Do people really resist change?
The more I think about it, the more I believe we've been focusing on the wrong thing.
When someone pushes back, we often label them as
"resistant."
But what if resistance is simply the visible part of something deeper?
Maybe they're wondering:
- Will I be able to do this?
- What does this mean for me?
- What if I fail?
I've seen this in organizations, in families, and even in myself.
That's why one idea from my book continues to resonate with me:
Resistance isn't the problem. Uncertainty is.
When we spend less time trying to convince people and more time understanding what's creating their uncertaint conversations change. Trust grows. Progress follows.
I'd love to hear your perspective.
Think about a time when you resisted a change. Looking back, was it really the change or was it the uncertainty that came with it?
